What Should I Do During a Dental Emergency?

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been knocked out, carefully pick it up by the crown (the white chewing surface) and avoid touching the root. Gently rinse it if needed and, if possible, place it back into the socket. If that isn’t possible, store the tooth in milk or a tooth preservation solution and contact our office right away—timing is important for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If a tooth has fractured, save any larger pieces if possible and bring them with you to your appointment. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and discomfort until you can be evaluated.

Toothache or Dental Pain

If you’re experiencing significant tooth pain, rinse your mouth and gently floss around the area to remove trapped food or debris. Avoid placing pain medication directly against the gums or tooth, as this may irritate oral tissue. If discomfort continues, contact our office so we can help determine the next steps.

If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, we encourage you to call our office—we’re happy to help guide you.
