TMJ / TMD Therapy

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jaw to your skull and play an essential role in everyday functions like chewing, speaking, and yawning. You can feel these joints just in front of your ears when you open and close your mouth.

When these joints or the surrounding muscles become strained or misaligned, it can lead to temporomandibular disorder (TMD), a condition that may cause ongoing discomfort and interfere with daily life.

At Terrace Heights Dental Center, we evaluate TMJ concerns carefully and offer personalized treatment options to help patients find lasting relief and improved jaw function.

Signs & Diagnosis

TMJ disorders can develop for a variety of reasons, including bite misalignment, teeth grinding (bruxism), stress-related clenching, or prior injury. Because symptoms can vary, a thorough evaluation is important to determine the underlying cause.

Common signs of TMD include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Headaches or ear-related discomfort
  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw

During your visit, our team will carefully assess your bite, jaw movement, and symptoms to determine whether TMJ dysfunction is contributing to your discomfort and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Treatment Options

Occlusal Adjustments (Equilibration)

If TMJ symptoms are related to bite imbalance, minor adjustments to the biting surfaces of the teeth may help create a more even distribution of pressure. In some cases, restorative or cosmetic treatments may also be recommended to support a more balanced bite and improved comfort.

Occlusal Splints

An occlusal splint is a custom-made oral appliance typically worn at night to help reduce clenching and grinding while guiding the jaw into a more relaxed position.

Over time, consistent use may help reduce muscle strain, relieve symptoms, and improve overall jaw comfort and function.

If you’re experiencing jaw pain or related symptoms, our team is here to help you explore treatment options and find relief tailored to your needs.
